Instructions:
-
Prepare the Mushroom:
- Clean the mushroom gently with a damp cloth. If it needs washing, quickly rinse it and let it dry.
- Slice the mushroom into 3.8 cm thick "steaks" by cutting down the middle and then slicing each half.
-
Sear the Mushrooms:
- Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium heat (about 180°C). Add 15 ml of olive oil.
- Place a mushroom steak in the pan and press down with a smaller skillet or a weighted surface for about 3-4 minutes on each side, until golden brown.
-
Make the Garlic Butter:
- In a small saucepan, melt 15 g of butter over low heat.
- Add the minced garlic and dried thyme. Let it simmer for a minute until fragrant.
-
Finish with Garlic Butter:
- Place the seared mushroom steaks back in the skillet with the garlic butter mixture.
- Baste the mushrooms with the butter, ensuring they're well coated.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
-
Serve:
- Serve the mushroom steaks hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
Optional Variations:
- Boerewors Marinade: Marinate the mushrooms in a mixture of olive oil, lemon juice, and a pinch of paprika before cooking for a South African twist.
- Braai Style: Grill the mushrooms over a braai for a smoky flavor, brushing with olive oil and seasoning with salt, pepper, and thyme.
