FAQs for Growing Mushrooms with Our Mushroom Boxes

If you’re new to growing mushrooms with one of our Mushroom Boxes, you might have a few questions. Here, we’ve answered some of the most common ones to help you get the most out of your mushroom-growing experience.

1. Do mushrooms need to be grown in the dark?

No, our mushrooms don’t need to be grown entirely in the dark. They thrive with a balance of light and darkness, much like they would under the shade of trees in nature. We recommend placing your Mushroom Box in a spot where it receives indirect light for part of the day and is shaded for the rest. Just be sure to keep it out of direct sunlight, and your mushrooms will do well!

2. What’s the shelf life of my Mushroom Box?

Inside your Mushroom Box is a living organism called mushroom mycelium. For the best results, we recommend opening and using your box soon after purchase. However, if you’re not ready right away, you can store the box in your fridge for up to 8-12 weeks. Be careful not to leave it for too long, as the mushrooms may start fruiting inside the box.

3. Where is the best place in my house to grow mushrooms?

The ideal place to grow your mushrooms is indoors, away from direct sunlight. Avoid placing the Mushroom Box in areas with high humidity, such as bathrooms where hot showers create steam or laundry rooms with frequent dryer use. A kitchen counter or any well-ventilated space works great for mushroom growth.

4. How many times will my Mushroom Box grow mushrooms?

We guarantee at least one crop of mushrooms when you follow our instructions, but many customers see multiple crops! With care and patience, you can expect a second, third, or even fourth crop. The first harvest will usually yield around 200g to 300g of  mushrooms (highly dependent on humidity). Subsequent crops will be smaller as the mycelium block gradually uses up its energy.

5. How do I harvest the mushrooms from my kit?

When your mushrooms are ready to harvest, gently reach between the mushroom cluster and the box, twist, and pull to detach them. Make sure to remove all the mushrooms, including any small ones, to prepare your Mushroom Box for the next crop. Once harvested, you can start spraying your kit again to encourage new growth.

We hope these answers help you on your mushroom-growing journey! If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out—we’re always happy to assist. Ready to grow your own fresh mushrooms at home? Order your Mushroom Box today and get started!
