The Ultimate Mycology Glitch: How to Turn One Mushroom Box a bucket load

In the world of gourmet gardening, we’ve discovered what can only be described as the ultimate mycology glitch.

Did you know that a single Mini Mushroom Box can provide you with enough "seeds" to grow bucket loads of gourmet mushrooms? This is the ultimate mycology glitch: instead of harvesting your box just once, you can use it to inoculate a massive 20-liter bucket for a 10x return on your investment.

Here is your step-by-step guide to turning one box into a full-scale home farm.

Understanding the Secret: The Mycelium

The key to this entire process is the mycelium. If you look inside your Mini Mushroom Box, you’ll see white, fuzzy "roots." These are actually living networks ready to spread and conquer new territory. Once your box arrives, you have everything you need to begin.

Phase 1: Gather Your Supplies

To start your bucket farm, you will need:

  • Two clean buckets: One for sterilizing and one for growing.

  • Nutrient-rich substrate: Use chopped straw or even dry lawn mowings. These materials provide the exact nutrients the mycelium needs for massive growth.

  • A drill: To create fruiting points.

  • Micropore tape: To protect your culture.

  • Rubbing Alcohol: To sterilize your bucket.

Phase 2: Preparation and Sterilization

  1. Sterilize your substrate: Fill one bucket with your straw or grass and submerge it completely in boiling water. Let it sit for 15 minutes to kill off any competing bacteria. You can use alcohol spray to sterilize the inside of your bucket, incase there are other spores there.

  2. Prep the grow bucket: While the straw is soaking, take your empty bucket and drill holes approximately every 10cm. These holes are where your mushrooms will eventually grow out from the bucket.

Phase 3: The "Mushroom Lasagna"

Once your substrate is sterilized, drain all the water away for approximately 12 hours. You’ll know it’s ready when you can squeeze a handful of it and no drops of water fall out.

Now, start layering your bucket:

  • Place a 5cm layer of straw in the bottom of the bucket with the holes.

  • Sprinkle a layer of mycelium (broken up from your Mini Mushroom Box) directly on top of the straw.

  • Repeat the process until the bucket is full.

Phase 4: Colonization and Growth

  1. Seal it up: Close the lid tightly and place micropore tape over every hole you drilled. This stops foreign spores from landing on your substrate while still allowing the mycelium to breathe.

  2. The waiting game: Place your bucket in a dark cupboard for two to three weeks. During this time, the mycelium will spread and completely take over the straw.

  3. The Flourish: After the colonization period, remove the tape and watch your mushrooms flourish!
